It was nice to have Paula and Petra pulling on the paddles as we canoed on Town Lake this morning….

The rapeseed (canola) fields are stunning in May. Here’s a shot of Zaruby, the highest peak in the Small Carpathian mountains, rising above the day-glo field….

Star TreakPaula and I went to the first showing of the new Star Trek movie here in Slovakia. There were maybe 20 people in the theater, and we know that at least two others besides us were Americans, so I guess it isn’t as big a deal here as it is in the States.

Overall the movie was good summer fun – lots of action, a plot that could have been worse, good special effects. There is absolutely nothing of substance to think about, and the bad guy isn’t very well developed, but the relationships among the young crew members are mostly fun. There are several references to the original Star Trek series, some of which are almost too corny (and all of them are of course corny), and I think Paula was the only one in the theater who was laughing at them.

Anyway, adjust your expectations and I think you will enjoy it. How’s that for a recommendation?

High humor

Very Good, JeevesI think I have failed to tell you how much fun you can have reading P. G. Wodehouse. Sorry about that. He’s most famous, of course, for his stories of Jeeves and Wooster, which are well worth your leisure time. But don’t negelect his stories on golf – even if you don’t like golf and know little about it.

Here’s a wee taste of the sort of fun you’ll have with Wodehouse and his extraordinary gift for similes:

The Right Hon. was a tubby little chap who looked as if he had been poured into his clothes and forgotten to say “when!”
