What’s a wedding without feasting?

Bosch: Wedding Feast at CanaIn order to honor Nicholas and Somaria as they marry tomorrow morning, and in order to honor the guests, and in order to celebrate God’s love and ours, we will savor some fine food this evening at Carmelo’s and tomorrow at Truluck’s.

I believe such indulgence should be part of the liturgy, don’t you?

It’s biblical, after all….

Why you should read Godric

Kris | Books | Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

Godric, by Frederick Buechner, is one of my favorite books. No other merely human book has taught me so much about grace. You should read it not once, but many times. I offer you some lines from the book, to help catch your interest.

“Words were the line that moored him to the world….”

“O holy dove, descend and roost on Godric here so that a heart may hatch in him at last. Amen.” (more…)

All I want for Christmas

Kris | Ora pro nobis | Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

These aren’t sold in any stores—but if you happen to think to pray for me in the next few days, here are a few things you might mention to our Lord (since, after all, all good gifts come from him):

  • I want to live coram deo, constantly conscious of God’s presence, constantly in communion with Jesus, continuously conscious of his love and care, constantly seeking his will and gladly making it mine.
  • I want my greatest disappointments to be times of distance from Jesus, and my greatest joys to be times of intimacy with him. (more…)

Karen and Daniel dancingThe ceremony was glorious today! We celebrated the creation of a new family today, as Karen married Daniel Greer. Too tired to write tonight—I’ll give my reflections later. For now, enjoy a simple picture of the new couple tripping the light fantastic….

God is good!

My emblem, my motto

Kris | Miscellany | Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

Father Latour was lost. His canteen was empty. His horse and pack mule had not drunk since yesterday morning. He knew that his animals wouldn’t recover till they got water, but “it seemed best to spend their last strength in searching for it.” He himself was feeling sick, tasting fever in his mouth and unsettled by seizures of vertigo.

The difficulty was that the country in which he found himself was so featureless—or rather, that it was crowded with features, all exactly alike. As far as he could see, on every side, the landscape was heaped up into monotonous red sand-hills, not much larger than haycocks, and very much the shape of haycocks. One could not have believed that in the number of square miles a man is able to sweep with the eye there could be so many uniform red hills. (more…)

Coming to Tabletalk in January

Kris | Our work | Sunday, December 3rd, 2006

Click to see a large image of St. George and the DragonThis year Tabletalk magazine asked me to write an article for them on the topic of—you guessed it—the mortification of sin. I was honored to be asked, and agreed to write something. I had help from many of you, my dear friends, who read my manuscript and gave constructive and loving criticism, which enabled me to rewrite it several times. (Some of you were even patient enough to read mutilpe versions, a kindness I’m thankful for.) The final copy that I sent to Tabletalk was accepted, and it will be printed in the January 2007 issue.

They chose a striking piece of art to accompany the article: Raphael’s St. George and the Dragon (1505).

I just wonder what Raphael would think about having my name printed across the top of his glorious painting….
